Post Construction BMPs Control Stormwater Runoff
Developing a successful stormwater run-off plan requires selecting the most effective BMP. Stormwater runoff is one of the major causes of pollution in our waters. Many types of BMPs may be acceptable to control stormwater runoff on your property, and sometimes, multiple BMPs may be combined to handle the variety of water quality and quantity requirements in your city or county. We’ve created this page to give you information on the variety of options available so you can make the right choice for your property.
Before you dive into the facts, find out what types of BMPs are acceptable in your state or locality. Then use this page to research the types of BMPs for your property.
Protecting Your Business: BMP Accountability
Owners, contractors and engineers who do no comply with the stormwater regulations may be subject to lawsuits or other penalties that can be detrimental and costly. Selecting the right BMPs for the site is critical to maintaining the impact to the environment. Contractors and owners are responsible for:
- Minimizing increases in stormwater runoff from any development to reduce flooding, siltation, and streambank erosion and to maintain the integrity of stream channels.
- Minimizing increases in nonpoint source pollution caused by storm water runoff from development that would otherwise degrade local water quality.
- Minimizing the total annual volume of surface water runoff which flows from any specific site during and following development so as not to exceed the predevelopment hydrologic regime to the maximum extent practicable. Local and state plans may require specific removal of sediments and pollutants.
- Reducing stormwater runoff rates and volumes, soil erosion, and nonpoint source pollution, wherever possible, through stormwater management controls and to ensure that these management controls are properly maintained and pose no threat to public safety.
Be responsible for ensuring the right BMP measures are in place when designing and implementing a your stormwater plan for your site.
